Supporting resilience in others
As leaders we therefore have an important role to play in managing the fears and anxieties of those who work for us. Ideally, leaders offer us a bounded space in which to work. This is known as providing ‘containment’; literally a safe space to flourish at work, emotionally and physically.
Containment is the process or means of keeping something within limits. In psychodynamic terms, and for our purposes, containment refers to the ability to create a safe space to explore ideas and possibilities; to step outside one’s normal realm of operation. When we have to deal with unexpected difficulties at work – when we lose a contract, or a valued member of staff leaves, or the political or social climate forces dramatic changes on the way we do business – we look to our leaders to contain us, to make it safe to tread in uncharted waters.
Circumstances that test our resilience trigger feelings of insecurity and vulnerability. Not everyone is aware of the impact of added demands on their ability to work effectively, so leaders and managers can provide the containment that allows us to process these events, and help us to see that we are indeed resilient enough to cope.
